Hey Tatum,
Don’t know that I have the magic answer, but I transitioned from afternoon to morning workouts when my schedule shifted. I used to work nights, sleep in, and lift in the afternoon. During covid I gave up the nightlife, and worked to get my hours shifted. All this to say, I began working out in the mornings, and it was a tough transition. I had to really “force” myself to get to the gym in the morning, and spent a few weeks to a month feeling like I was dragging myself to the gym. I focused on how good I felt post workout. I’d done something hard and good for myself, and it has become a cornerstone of my day. I love training, so that definitely helped, but came to truly crave my morning sessions. I think like any shift in habit, it takes time, but is well worth it in my opinion. Small things to make the habit easier to adapt here great. Leave your work out clothes and bag in sight and ready to go. Plan your session the day/evening before. Focus on the feeling of accomplishment when you finish, and let it set you up for a great day. Don’t know if any of this helped, but as a former shift worker turned diurnal creature, I wouldn’t trade my morning workouts for anything. Good luck getting on it early!
Also no real trick - but I set my alarm for the latest moment possible so I don’t give myself time to think or change my mind. If the class is at 5am, my alarm is at 4:45a and I have to be out the door in under ten minutes. I can’t hit snooze and I can’t lay in bed and waffle. I get up or I miss it. It’s not bullet proof, but generally works for me. I also frame it as if I can’t go if I don’t go then - can’t go later, so now or never, also motivates me. Lastly, it is always true I am glad I worked out. I always feel better for having started my day that way, and gotten my workout done already. So I try to remind myself of that!
Thanks! I’ve tried the approach of waiting till the last minute to wake up and while not fool proof does make me rush a bit more and get the adrenaline going! Appreciate the tips and will try focusing on the little things such as accomplishing a challenging task even when I didn’t necessarily want to. I also agree that I feel better after starting my day out with a workout and reminding myself of that will make it easier to get up and get going.
I am there myself! i set my alarm for 345am… try to leave by 430; arrive @ 445; eliptical and burpees until 520(25/30 mins); lift until 550 home @ 610 to shower and off to work by 635… then i have a 45 minute ride.
it’s difficult! one thing goes awry and my whole thing is off the trail.
i could work out in the evening but the gyms are so crowded…
it’s giving up something or doing something to get what you want…
